Picado's speech we learned that manufacturing jobs are not being taken away by other people in Mexico or china they are being taken by robots. "87% of manufacturing jobs have been eliminated because we have made improvements in our own productivity due to automation." [Picado 3:20-3:22, logos]. Ethos was used when he explained that he saw and worked in places that dealt with the subject he was talking about. Also, it was noted that protectionism does not work. It is a great way to get votes in an election for those who do not understand the ramifications of it. "One out of ten lost manufacturing jobs was due to off shoring."[Picado 3:27-3:31, logos]. Which means that if protectionism went into effect it would save only one job that would most likely get automated in a few years anyway. And because of the use of logos, ethos and insight that Picado gave the audience in just twelve minutes and five seconds, this is a top notch speech. The realization of what would happen if Americans put protectionism happens at minute 10:00 through minute 10:10. This is when Picado explains that the price of everyday objects that Americans export could raise cost by almost 30%. That is the destructive power of the American dream. One American protests protectionism to keep their dream alive, then the rest of the Americans join in due to ignorance of the effects it might have on our economy, and finally a 30% price increase just to keep one manufacturing job in America for a few more years until that too is automated. Now that is much less of a threat do to the insight Picado gave his audience. Another thing that made Picado’s speech really amazing was his allusion to Angelina Jolie. It was just a great way for him as the speaker to keep us as the audience captivated by his speech. that way the audients could get as much information as possible.in the middle of his speech Picado gave an example of how the trade network works and how if protectionism is implemented it would hurt that chain, and in turn the very same people that voted to put it in action. For all of these reasons Picado is clearly a great speaker who gave an even better speech that I really enjoyed.
In this case the American dream can vet viewed as a negative thing, for the reason of ignorance. One American protests protectionism to keep their dream alive, and through rhetoric appeals they convince other Americans to protest or push for a protectionism law. then the rest of the Americans join in due to ignorance (not stupidity just a lack of knowledge that stops the individual from making the smartest move) of the effects it might have on our economy, therefore, there could be up to a 30% price increase just to keep one manufacturing job in America for a few more years until that too is automated. It is a sad future for manufacturing workers. But it is a bright future for the rest of the Americans who want their products cheap, and fast. I learned what protectionism is, and why people think it will work, and why in reality it will not. https://www.ted.com/talks/augie_picado_the_real_reason_manufacturing_jobs_are_disappearing |
